Some success some setbacks 6/10/19

So far, my experiences with the Quad has been mixed results.  I plan to document this in more detail with a video in the next week or so.

Much of this I would attribute to the learning curve associated with a new machine.  Some, I am beginning to believe may be simply that the software is still in development.  I also want to acknowledge Josh N Bee for setting up a very helpful Facebook group for M3D Quad Users.

Josh has also posted a youtube video that shows the process of loading filament.  I strongly recommend that new Quad owners watch this video before attempting to load filament for the first time.  These are both very helpful resources that I have posted at the top of this page.
Some early success:  The quad has proven to be quite effective at printing gradient fades where the color transitions between filaments gradually.  So far I have printed successfully printed several knights from my organic chess set and a phone case.

Some Challenges:  One challenging that has been vexing me is stringing, particularly with PLA filament. This has resulted in unintentionally  fuzzy chess pieces and dice.   I conducted a stringing test with increasing retraction and it appeared that the printer was only retracting on about half of the non printing moves.  I suspect this may be an issue with the Voxelizer Experimental software but that warrants additional experimentation.  I am currently experimenting with using Slic3r and a post processing script by Juan Rosario.

M3D Crane Quad Unboxing Video

Unboxing Video - Youtube video posted 5/15/19

So almost a year ago I ordered a new M3D Crane Quad 3d printer.  This product was promoted under a kickstarter style purchasing option.  There is a lot that has happened in the year since I made the initial purchase but today the printer arrived.  Unfortunately, there are a couple problems that will delay me being able to try the printer out.

It appears to have been well packaged and there was no damage to the box. But one of the cables that connect to the screen was badly damaged. I contacted M3D but it is after hours so I am not expecting any response till tomorrow.

In this unboxing video posted on May 15 2019 I unpack the Crane Quad to discover that a cable to the video screen was damaged in shipping.

There are a few other things I noticed that deserve comment. The connector on one of the stepper motors was slightly damaged but not beyond use.

Also, it seems like the wiring is a generally shorter than it probably should be. For example, the X stepper wire seems to be about 2" short and pulls out of the stepper if I raise the X gantry near the top of the range. The wiring generally seems to be on the wimpy side. I would expect the stepper wires to be a somewhat heavier gauge. Then again the steppers themselves are quite a bit smaller than the ones on my Prusa Mk2.

Another thing I noticed even from photos and video, it seems like there is room for improvement in cable management. Not only are some of the cables on the short side but they are more messy that I would like to see. For example I noticed that there is a potential for one of the extruder motor wires to get caught under the X carriage wheels.

Disclaimer: I purchased the Crane Quad from FitForLaunch Batch 3 (now midSummer 2019 shipping). M3D ran a promotional contest in late April for an eager enthusiast upgrade. I am not sure how many people entered into this contest but apparently I won and that is why my machine arrived in May.
